The prestigious Junior Showtime Competition, run by Mansfield Rotary Club, is always eagerly anticipated, and this year’s competition confirmed what we already know…that Ashfield School and Post 16 performers are simply the best!
Year 12 students Demi Mitchell and Millie Hardy produced a stunning performance that won them first place in the duet section, and Year 10 student Jasmine Allsopp performed beautifully as part of the dance troupe that was placed first in the dance troupe section.
As the category awards came to an end, tension mounted as performers and their friends and families in the audience waited to hear who had been named overall winners of the coveted Junior Showtime 2019 title…and it was Demi and Millie! The girls’ duet had very clearly not only impressed their audience, but also the judges.
Demi said of the experience: “We’re absolutely thrilled to have won the overall competition, especially as it’s the first time we’ve ever entered it! We’ve had amazing support, not least from Mrs Guy and the teachers in the Music and Drama departments at Ashfield, and we’ve very grateful.”
The girls have sung in the school’s choir, Ashfield Vocal Ensemble, since Year 7, and Mille was keen to emphasise the value of the experience they have acquired from that: “We’re so lucky to have had the opportunity to sing with the school choir all over the world, and to gain invaluable performance experience from that, and from taking part in school shows and concerts.”
Mrs Guy, Director of Ashfield School Vocal Ensemble and vocal tutor, went along to support the girls, and said: “I was immensely proud of Demi and Millie. It’s very unusual for first-time entrants to win the overall competition and I’m delighted for them; they work very hard and deserve this success.”
Well done to Demi, Millie and also to Jasmine for doing so well in a hard-fought competition against so many of the area’s talented young people.
