Ashfield School Year 10 student Katie Scales has just returned from a triumphant weekend competing in the Open European Taekwondo Championships in Poland. Sparring against very tough opponents, Katie won the silver medal, which contributed to the GB team collectively winning the most medals and being crowned overall champions! Katie’s dad, Simon Scales, also competed in the competition…and brought home 2 silver medals!
Katie has been studying Taekwondo since she was just 4 years of age and is now a 2nd Dan Blackbelt and the holder of many national medals, including 5 golds from this year alone. She has achieved these heights through pure dedication and hard work – after school, at weekends, and even when she was on holiday.
The next goal on Katie’s list is to represent England in South Korea, birthplace of Taekwondo, in the 2020 World Championships, and we have no doubt that she will achieve this. She is training hard in preparation at Inspire Taekwondo in Mansfield (affiliated with the Heart of England Group, www.inspiretkd.co.uk), in addition to effectively applying the discipline and focus she has developed through her sport to her studies at Ashfield School.
Katie is pictured here shortly after being presented with her silver medal; well done Katie, and we look forward to reporting on your future successes!
